Samsung Launches 1TB HDD for Notebooks

By: Chris Preimesberger, eWeek

Samsung Electronics on June 9 launched its first 1TB internal hard disk drive for use in notebooks and other mobile PCs. The Spinpoint M8 consists of two 500GB platters in a 9.5mm-height form factor, so as to fit into a high number of portable computers. Spinpoint M8 is currently in mass production and available worldwide with the 1TB drive at about $129.

Facebook sorry over face tagging launch

by the BBC

Facebook has apologised for the way it rolled-out a new system that recognises users’ faces. The social network said that it should have done more to notify members about the global launch. Its Tag Suggestions feature scans photos and automatically picks out existing friends. Although users have the option to switch it off, some complained that they were not explicitly asked if they wanted it activated. Facebook said that the system was intended to speed up the process of assigning a name to a picture, known as tagging. It was introduced in the US in December 2010 but has only now been launched globally.

Powergorilla: portable charger

I have been testing a Powergorilla portable charger for a few weeks now, mainly as a phone charger for extended trips rather than a laptop charger, and one thing sticks out – this is not your average power block. The massive 21000mAh capacity battery pack for standard 5V USB devices is absolutely superb, and means you can keep all your gadgets charged on the move, without having to worry about finding a mains power socket at all.

EYEBALL camera

cientists from Northwestern University and the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign are the first to develop a curvilinear camera, much like the human eye, with the significant feature of a zoom capability, unlike the human eye.

The "eyeball camera" has a 3.5x optical zoom, takes sharp images, is inexpensive to make and is only the size of a nickel. (A higher zoom is possible with the technology.).

While the camera won't be appearing at Best Buy any time soon, the tunable camera -- once optimized -- should be useful in a number of applications, including night-vision surveillance, robotic vision, endoscopic imaging and consumer electronics.

"Microfluidic" devices

New lab-on-chip advance

Scientists have invented a technique that uses inexpensive paper to make "microfluidic" devices for rapid medical diagnostics and chemical analysis.

The innovation represents a way to enhance commercially available diagnostic devices that use paper-strip assays like those that test for diabetes and pregnancy.

"With current systems that use paper test strips you can measure things like pH or blood sugar, but you can't perform more complex chemical assays," said Babak Ziaie, a Purdue University professor of electrical and computer engineering and biomedical engineering. "This new approach offers the potential to extend the inexpensive paper-based systems so that they are able to do more complicated multiple analyses on the same piece of paper. It's a generic platform that can be used for a variety of applications".

Findings are detailed in a research paper published online this week in the journal Lab on a Chip.

Current lab-on-a-chip technology is relatively expensive because chips must be specifically designed to perform certain types of chemical analyses, with channels created in glass or plastic and tiny pumps and valves directing the flow of fluids for testing.

The chips are being used for various applications in medicine and research, measuring specific types of cells and molecules in a patient's blood, monitoring microorganisms in the environment and in foods, and separating biological molecules for laboratory analyses. But the chips, which are roughly palm-size or smaller, are difficult to design and manufacture.

Best ways to teach science and technology

The concepts and definitions of such terms as innovation, low-cost, equipment, science, technology and education, which by their associations form the title of the present article, will be presented. The importance of creative participation in the design and development of apparatus for science and technology education will be stressed from the historical point of view, from philosophy of science education, from the system concept and information theory and from the point of view of social and economic needs. Some examples of instrument design and development from different fields of science will be given to illustrate innovative activity in instrument design. An attempt will be made to define the strategy for meeting the need of equipment for science and technology education in the developing countries like Bangladesh, keeping in mind the present state of progress in the developed world.

Cloud Computing

The "free" iCloud reminds us of Apple's real business model. Against this tattered backdrop, iCloud walks on stage.
The most striking difference with MobileMe and other web-based offerings already mentioned, is the shift away from the browser. I'll use a word-processor document to illustrate. In both cases we'll assume you've already stated your credentials, login and password for Google, Apple ID, and password for iCloud. With Google Docs, you fire up your browser, enter the URL for your service, compose or edit a document, file it in a folder in Google's Cloud, and it's ready for you from any computer anywhere.

Preparing for the next-generation of spaceflight

As the shuttle programme draws to a close, NASA has contracted Lockheed Martin to develop a next-generation vehicle for deep space exploration. Here, the Multi-Purpose Crew Vehicle (MPCV), unveiled in May, is undergoing tests at the Lockheed Martin Vertical Test Facility in Colorado to ensure it can withstand the harsh conditions of deep space expeditions.

Whereas the shuttle programme focused on low-Earth orbit, the new spacecraft is designed to explore further afield possibly to an asteroid or Mars.

Lockheed Martin was commissioned after the Obama administration scrapped the moon-bound Constellation programme, and MPCV resurrects designs from the Orion capsule, affiliated with Constellation.

Google to abandon older browsers

Google is phasing out support for older browsers from 1 August. Those using IE7, Safari 3, Firefox 3.5 and their predecessors to view Gmail, Google Calendar, Talk, Docs and Sites will then lose some functions. Eventually, it warned, these web services will stop working for those sticking with older browsers. The move is part of a trend to stop the use of ageing browsers which can be insecure and not sophisticated enough to handle the latest web technologies.

Bangladesh signs deal with China for 3G technology

Dhaka, June 9 (IANS) Bangladesh Thursday signed a loan agreement worth $211 million with a Chinese bank for the introduction of 3G technology and expansion of 2.5G network in the country.

M. Musharraf Hossain Bhuiyan, secretary of Bangladesh's economic relations division, and Zhang Xianyi, China's ambassador to Dhaka, signed the agreement on behalf of the Bangladesh government and the Export-Import Bank of China in Dhaka, Xinhua reported.

The loan will be used by the state-owned mobile operator Teletalk under the supervision of the post and telecommunications ministry.

The project will provide affordable mobile phone services to the people of Bangladesh, a statement said.

After installation of the 3G technology, mobile phone users will be able to enjoy real-time video calling, live mobile TV, high-speed download, e-education, public health services, tele-medicine and e-shopping on their phones.

Daylight Saving Time

Daylight Saving Time is a way of getting more light out of the day by advancing clocks by one hour during the summer. During Daylight Saving Time, the sun appears to rise one hour later in the morning, when people are usually asleep anyway, and sets one hour later in the evening, seeming to stretch the day longer.Daylight savings time is also called summer time or daylight savings time. When DST is not observed, it is called standard time, normal time or winter time.

Embed MP3 Files Into Your Blog or Website

You can spice up your web pages by adding background music or sound. All you do is upload / save the sound file to your web server and place the HTML code.
First of all, it is highly recommended that you have your own domain name (AnyName.com) and a music host - in other words, a web host that supports music uploads.

Step 1. Find a music or sound file that you'd like to use. Midi (.mid) is a good sound format to use because these files are generally smaller and load quickly.
There plenty of sites on the internet that allow you to download these types of songs for free.
Step 2. Next, upload (save) this music file to your web server either using an FTP program (here's a free one here) or your web host's file management control panel.
Step 3. Now open the web page you want the song to load with. You'll have to insert the following HTML code into your site, but first you'll need to edit it.

    bdfreelancer.net

Whenever you enter a query in a search engine and hit 'enter' you get a list of web results that contain that query terms. Users normally tend to visit websites that are at the top of this list as they perceive those to be more relevant to the query. If you have ever wondered why some of these websites rank better than the others then you must know that it is because of a powerful web marketing technique called Search Engine Optimization (SEO).

    Pharmaceutical Machineries

During the 60's and 70's the pharmaceutical industry mostly imported machines from Europe for their processing and packaging needs. But the mid 70's saw the country going through a severe shortage of foreign exchange and therefore the Indian government introduced very high import duties and restrictive import licensing policies. This forced all the pharmaceutical companies to encourage some Indian engineering enterprises to manufacture machines locally. This was perhaps the only route for the pharmaceutical industry to enhance production and cater to the growing demands of the domestic market.

The most significant aspect of the Indian pharmaceutical industry is that at the time of Independence the foreign manufacturers had stranglehold on the market but today the Indian manufacturers have turned the table with the market share close to 75%. In fact India is now the fifth largest producer of drugs and pharmaceutical after USA, Japan, Europe and China.
